Dogs in the City: Meet Jay and Byson of San Francisco
They’re the city dwellers of the canine kind. The dogs about town. From primped pooches to zestful rescues to perky pups playing in the park. These dogs and their human companions find adventure among skyscrapers and long-lasting friendships in dog parks. The Dogs in the City photo series roams the urban jungle in search of their unique tales.
Dog dad’s name: Jay
Dog’s name: Byson
Neighborhood: Hayes Valley, San Francisco
How did you two meet? I rescued Byson about a year ago from my neighbor, who didn’t take very good care of him. He’s the first dog I’ve ever owned.
How is living in the city with a dog? It’s very interesting. There are a lot of dog owners in San Francisco — which makes sense, since it’s the most dog-friendly city in the world! There are challenges, though. A lot of San Francisco’s property is owned by management companies that don’t allow pets, so you have to find a pet-friendly landlord.
Where’s your favorite place to go together? Right here in Hayes Valley is our favorite place to go. We also go to coffee shops together, and a lot of the restaurants in San Francisco are good about allowing pets. Byson loves the beach, too. Splashing in the waves is his favorite thing, though I have to keep an eye on him because he’s so short!
What’s the best thing about being Byson’s dad? I love him. He’s like a child to me. I can’t remember what my life was like before I had him. It’s really fun to walk about town as a duo. He gets a lot of attention, so we meet a lot of people. And he gives really good cuddles.
