What’s the best thing about being a pet parent? You always have companionship and an adventure buddy.
How did you meet Scout? We think Scout’s 6 or 7. She’s a rescue, and she showed up at my sister’s house in Oakland one day. My sister came back from work and there was this little dog sleeping in her bushes. Nobody claimed her for a month, so we took her. She’s part pit bull, part shepherd. There’s a little shiba inu in her face.
What are the difficulties about living with a dog in the city? None, really. I can take her most anywhere with me. Most shops let me bring her in, and they have treats. She’s with me all the time that I’m not working.
The one thing that was hard was finding a dog walker for her. She needed a lot of training when we first got her, because she was aggressive with other dogs. The SFSPCA was really good about helping us train her. We went to workshops, which helped me understand and then modify her behavior. She’s much calmer now, but it took about two years for her to become this way.
What tips do you have for people wanting to get a dog? Take classes! A lot of people think that a dog’s behavior is like a person’s behavior, so it’s important for people to realize that a dog’s brain is wired completely differently. Even reading about dog behavior can really help you understand them better.
