Your dog’s ancestors may have once led a very different life from what your dog lives now. A look into your dog’s breed history can provide you with clues to its current temperament or appearance. Here are some interesting facts about some popular dog breeds to help you fully flesh out your furry friend’s origin story.
This tiny dog is said to have originated in Mexico. Chihuahua remains have even been found among Mayan ruins, which suggest that the little dog may have played a big part in ancient culture.
The queen of England’s favorite dog was originally bred in Wales as a farm dog. It was the corgi’s job to guard the domestic birds, but some say the corgi also possessed a fantastical purpose as well. Lots of lore suggests that corgis were the perfect size to serve as transportation for fairies.
The Labs we love today originated in England (not Labrador, Canada). This friendly breed was used for hunting and developed a love for retrieving fallen game from bodies of water.
The name “beagle” comes from a medieval term for “hound dog” and the beagle’s origins can be traced back to ancient Greece. Beagles were bred to be hunting dogs and were prized by queens and kings.
This sleek-haired dog likely came from England or Scotland. The collie was used mostly as a brave hunting dog, though, nowadays we are more familiar with movie star collie, Lassie.
