Crazy For Collies: The 8 Best Things About Border Collies
Anybody who’s seen one, met one or been the lucky parent of one knows that border collies are awesome. Why? So. Many. Reasons. They’re smart, eager and always aware of what’s going on around them. Take a look at why we think border collies win at being dogs.
They’re born athletes
That’s why it’s so important to keep your border collie active both mentally and physically from the very beginning. Start when she’s young—about 2 months old—to make full use of her eagerness to learn and her need to impress you.
They’re experts at crowd control
These black and white beauties have herding down to a fine art. It’s in their nature to round up the troops and make sure there are no stragglers—useful if you’re heading out on a family excursion and you need everyone out the door!
They’re really friendly, especially when there are treats involved
Border collies are affectionate souls. They’re people pleasers and love to get your approval in the form of praise, treats and cuddles. You’ll often find a border collie gazing at you intently. That’s partly because he loves you but mostly because he wants a Milk-Bone® dog treat.
Their potential for playfulness is off the charts
Before you adopt a border collie, consider how many times a day you want to play fetch or catch, because these pups are all about playtime. Even as they grow, they don’t lose their puppy playfulness, and that makes them excellent playmates.
Border collies have their eyes on the prize. They have the focus, stamina and enthusiasm of an athlete. It’s in their nature as herding dogs to get the job done, whether it be catching a tennis ball or opening the refrigerator to find some tasty morsels.
They aim high
The BC is a high achiever. Like this border collie here, doing everything she can to catch that flying disk. The same goes for pulling on the leash to get to the park, running at full tilt to chase a furry friend and even eating and drinking at top speed. Lots of training will be in order to teach both obedience and good manners.
No obstacle is too big
BCs are the athletes of the canine world and have been known to jump six-foot-tall fences. The good news is that the BC is easy to train, and is a superfast learner. He takes basic commands such as "sit" and "stay" in stride and quickly wants to get to the more challenging stuff, such as dodging, weaving and jumping. That’s why you’ll often find a border collie on the top of the winner’s podium.
Border collies look great in landscape photography
The BC was (and still is) bred for herding sheep—a physically demanding job that requires plenty of energy and stamina. That’s why this breed loves to run around and smell the great outdoors. He needs an outdoorsy kind of parent too. After all, if you can’t keep up, how are you going to get shots like this one?!
In case you hadn’t guessed yet, we’re smitten with collies of all kinds.
