5 Questions to Ask a Pet Sitter
As hard as it is to look at sad puppy eyes, sometimes you have to go out and leave Fido at home. When this happens, you’ll need a pet sitter you can trust. Here are some questions to ask to help find the perfect sitter for your furry friend.
Are you certified?
Sure, you could have your neighbor look after your dog, but wouldn’t you rather hire someone with credentials? There are lots of different ways a pet sitter can undergo training and get certified. The main way is to get certified via the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters. Their website is also a great way to search for certified sitters near you.
Do you know what to do in an emergency?
In addition to regular certification, a pet sitter can also undergo special training on how to help animals in emergency situations. Ask if your pet sitter is trained in doggy CPR and other first aid techniques.
What’s your sitting style?
Some dogs need constant stimulation, and some just want a buddy to lounge with. Make sure your sitter’s preferred activity level matches your dog’s, so they can make the most of their time together.
Do you have any special skills?
Each sitter is different. A sitter who plays sports may be able to give your dog an athletic workout, while a beauty-savvy sitter may be able to groom your dog when he visits. Ask your sitter what special skills he brings to the table.
Your house or mine?
Does your sitter take dogs home to look after, or will he come to you? If you have a social dog, it may be fun for her to check out a new place. But a shy dog may prefer more familiar surroundings.
Once you’ve found a sitter you like, invite him over for a trial run. If your dog sees you interacting with the sitter in a friendly way, she’ll know the pet sitter is a person she can trust even after you leave. Check out this map for pet sitters near you, and share your sitter-finding tips below.
